"For the Record." Admiral Francisco Cumberland has a dream, in which his late grandmother tells him that the time has come to assume the duties of Master of Onada. Knowing this to be true, he informs his superiors that he intends to retire. Several media services take an interest in his life and career, which brings to light an incident from his Academy days: the death of Antares Squadron, of which Cumberland was briefly a member, from an attempt at the Kolvoord Starburst.
Cumberland is strangely reticent to discuss the incident with anyone, which prompts a great deal of speculation on the part of the media and the Admiralty. On the advice of his fellow admiral and friend, Jake Caffey, Cumberland confesses his knowledge of the team's plan prior to their deaths and accepts an official reprimand in his permanent record just prior to his retirement from Starfleet. Stardate 44001.4. An armada of 40 starships is assembled at Wolf 359 to stop a Borg vessel from reaching Earth. One of the Starfleet ships, the New Orleans-class Vladivostok, loses its captain, Daniel Calavicci, during the battle. His first officer, Cdr. Ulysses Murdock, realizes that the battle is hopeless and elects to retreat from the area, picking up survivors in escape pods before heading for Alpha Centauri.
Events are conjectural. Concurrent with "Best of Both Worlds, Part II." [TNG]. Shown in flashback in "Methuselah's Child, Part II." MM
Stardate 44026 A general inquiry into Commander Murdock's actions is held at Starfleet Command. Although there is a strong minority who favor court-martialing Murdock, the decision is handed down that he acted correctly in a situation that had, after all, no chance of victory or even survival. Nevertheless, the feeling that Murdock acted in cowardice persists with some Starfleet officers for several years to come.

"Tourist Season." Subsequent to the inquiry, Cmdr. Ulysses Murdock is temporarily assigned as Starfleet diplomatic liaison to Yalc IV, a planet in neutral space. Although the Yalcans have the underlying technology to develop warp drive, their rather casual attitude toward life has left them a little backward.
During Murdock's tenure, the Yalcan "Voom" festival, ostensibly a bacchanalia, coincides with a group of Ferengi "tourists" who plan to annex the planet for the Ferengi Alliance. Working with Ensign Laera Brooks (the other Starfleet officer assigned to Yalc IV) Murdock discovers that the Yalcans did not build the large edifice called "The Castle of placed Light". The Kalandans placed it on the planet (prior to the Yalcans's settlement there) several thousand years ago. The edifice serves as the center of the gravitational "lens" formed when the moons of Yalc IV achieve a certain configuration in the sky, which Murdock discovers to be a Kalandan transport system.
Unfortunately, after several millennia, the system has become misaligned, causing severe tectonic shifts (hence the naming of the "Voom" Festival, a derivation of the old Yalcan word for "earthquake"). With the help of a few Yalcans, Murdock and Brooks succeed in shutting down the transport system and driving off the Ferengi.
Ulysses Murdock is promoted to captain and given command of the Nebula-class starship Hannibal, the first vessel to go by that name in almost a century. He researches several candidates for first officer before settling on one; however, the individual in question declines, and not altogether respectfully, due to Murdock's recent history.
Lt. Cmdr. Jodell DaKar is given the assignment of chief engineer of the Hannibal, unknown to Murdock, through the machinations of retired Admiral Francisco Cumberland, as an amusement. Cumberland knows that Murdock (AKA Cassius Flagg) and DaKar's previous host Kiara were once lovers.

"Methuselah's Child, Part II." Stardate 44578. The Hannibal, with its new first officer James Brubaker and chief engineer Jodell DaKar, is assigned to re-open diplomatic relations with the Dagoda, the same race encountered almost a century ago by the original Hannibal.
Unknown to most of the crew and even senior officers, Captain Ulysses Murdock was present at this time due to his quasi-immortality. He is initially skeptical of the Dagoda's stated intention to establish peaceful relations with the Federation. This skepticism is borne out when the Dagoda, in the middle of a peace conference aboard the Hannibal, stage a massive take-over of the starship, using Revisionist technology that they managed to hide over the decades.
Fortunately, as they do not recognize Murdock as the "Cassius Flagg" who helped to foil the Revisionists’ plans a century ago, they are unprepared for his "resurrection" after he is shot with a disrupter. Eventually, he and the other officers are successful in retaking the Hannibal. Most of the Dagoda leaders are killed in the fighting. After confiscating the dangerous technology, the Federation places the Dagoda system off-limits for fifty years.
Subsequent to these events, the senior offices of the Hannibal agree to keep Murdock's true nature a secret. MM

"Ozymandias." Stardate 46894.5. The U.S.S. Hannibal comes across a small ship called the Epoch, which claims to be a Federation timeship from the twenty-ninth century. However, its captain, apparently a descendant of the present-day Borg named Tremar 216, kidnaps Captain Murdock and several of the senior officers. He takes them to his time, over a thousand years in the future, where the war-torn remnants of the galaxy are ruled by a future version of Murdock, now calling himself Ozymandias.
(A century after he assumed command of the Hannibal, a plague apparently brought from the Delta Quadrant ravaged the Federation. Murdock, apparently immune, found himself hunted for his unique DNA by various factions of the increasingly disparate Federation, including people that he had come to trust. The many betrayals he suffered during this period caused an unimaginable bitterness within him, which he eventually channeled in rather anti-social ways. Utilizing his immense scientific and strategic knowledge, Murdock set in motion the destruction of most of the major empires in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Sometime later, he assembled several surviving races into an empire spread across half the galaxy. He kept himself alive past his natural lifespan by various means, but was nearing the point of no return. He planned to infuse the DNA of his younger self into his own body, thereby prolonging his own life.)
The senior officers are able to outwit and defeat Ozymandias' followers, while Murdock confronts his future self. Ozymandias warns that he himself had killed a future version of himself at Murdock's age. Murdock nevertheless kills his future self, knowing that the future would not be immutable. He and his officers subsequently return to their own time in the Epoch.
The title of this story (and the name that Murdock's future self assumes) refers to the poem by Percy Shelley: "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings; look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair!" MM

"Moebius Loop." Stardate 47829.5 The Hannibal receives a distress call from a Federation science outpost on what appears to be a dead and unremarkable planet. However, two surprises await the Hannibal's crew: the planet holds a sentient time-portal called The Guardian of Forever, which a Romulan strike team has now discovered and is attempting to commandeer for the Empire. Most of the strike team is incapacitated, although the commanding officer, Major Groval, manages to escape through the portal, to Earth in the year 1897. Captain Murdock then remembers encountering Groval, in his identity as Prof. Osiris Nightshade, and remembers the two strangers who came to aid him in foiling a plot to kill the British Queen Victoria. Cdr. Brubaker and Lt. Cdr. Dakar travel back through the Guardian, meet Nightshade and bring Groval back to the present. MM

Captain Jacob Connor is given a ground assignment, the command of Deep Space Station 12, after a series of successful actions against Maquis terrorists in the area of space beyond the Bajoran sector known as "The Badlands." He relinquishes command of the U.S.S. Aries and after an extensive debriefing, goes on an extended leave.

"A Matter of Trust." Stardate 49569.3; After the destruction of Deep Space 12 by Maquis terrorists, its commander, Captain Jacob Connor, is en route to Star Base 200 aboard the U.S.S. Farragut. He discovers that the Captain, First Officer and his best friend, Admiral Jaime Martinez, are Maquis operatives.
The officers in question planned and ordered a smaller explosion on the station as a "shock and awe" display, but the people who planted the device wanted to send Connor and the Federation a clear message. The Farragut captain, XO and Adm Martinez want to get the man who destroyed the station too, but they will have to kill him to keep their secret.
Captain Connor and the Farragut Chief of Security Jahn Retief discover the conspiracy and are each given a commendation for their efforts. Connor is given command of the Farragut in short order would ask that Retief be promoted to the position of Farragut's XO. Retief would serve loyally until his death in the fight against the Klingons at the Lembatta Cluster. SPS

Shortly after the U.S.S. Voyager's disappearance in the Badlands a group of starships, led by the U.S.S. Farragut, go in and mount a search. The Farragut's scientists find remnants of sporocystian energy, in quantities sufficient enough to be significant; in other words, great enough to move a starship to a sporocystian dimension or to another section of space, possibly to another galaxy, however, the results are inconclusive.
Conjecture. Approximately 2 months after "The Caretaker" (VGR). SPS
Capt. Connor files a report with the sector commander stating that it is his opinion that Voyager was captured by a sporocystian energy field and knocked out of the Alpha Quadrant. He further opines that the ship could still be trying to find its way back home. Starfleet Command takes a serious view of the report, but feels that Conner's theory is a longshot. Starfleet later reviews the report in detail when Voyager manages to make contact with the U.S.S. Prometheus ("Message in a Bottle).
Conjecture. I feel that there should have been some mention made of the rescue efforts by Starfleet in regards to finding Voyager.
Note: The reason that Connor is so fervent in his desire to find Voyager is that he is carrying the torch for Kate Janeway. They met at a Starfleet mixer in San Francisco in 2369 and had a three week fling that she didn't consider anything more than casual. Both of them were so busy career-wise that Connor never pressed the point. SPS

The U.S.S. Farragut is dispatched to Ajilon Prime to save colonists from a possible Klingon attack of that colony. Starfleet sends the ship into the area with no other support. Captain Connor formerly follows the orders under protest.

"Nor the Battle to the Strong." [DS9] The U.S.S. Farragut is destroyed by a Klingon wolf pack near the Lembatta Cluster during a rescue mission to save colonists on Ajilon Prime. Captain Conner and some of his crew survive the attack although Executive Officer Jahn Retief is killed in the line of duty saving the Captain. As the survivors escape the ship, Connor sets it to self-destruct on a proximity sensor. As the first wave of Klingons move in to take the ship, they are taken out by the Farragut's explosion. Conner's action (having destroyed the enemy ships after vacating his bridge) is seen by the Klingons as dishonorable. Later this year, Captain Conner assumes command of the Sovereign class U.S.S. Raleigh.
Note: This is the first time that a ship in the Star Trek timeline has affected a character in the SFOF timeline. I picked the Farragut as my TNG command after my second big screen viewing of "Star Trek: Generations;" little did I know that it was going to get blown out from under me. SPS

November 4. After an extended leave Captain Jacob Connor is given command of the Sovereign class U.S.S. Raleigh, the third ship in her class, built at the San Francisco Fleet yards. Captain Connor is also given the Medal of Honor for his efforts in trying to rescue the colonists on Ajilon Prime prior to the destruction of his ship.
Biography and service record of Jacob Connor.
Note: Connor does deserve the Medal of Honor but I assume that Starfleet gives it him for the PR value as well. This is a far cry from the Starfleet of 100 years ago protecting Ari Enfield by cloistering him away at Utopia Planetia. SPS

Starships Hannibal, Galaxy, Bradbury and Raleigh are assigned to the Ninth Fleet operating out of Deep Space Nine under the command of Captain Benjamin Sisko.
SFOF historical accounts.
"Journal." Stardate 51025.4 The USS Hannibal is captured by Jem'Hadar forces while on patrol near Cardassian space. Most of the crew are rendered unconscious by the intruder-control system after the bridge is seized, the senior officers are imprisoned in the brig, and Captain Murdock is interrogated by a Vorta telepath hoping to discover vital Starfleet defense plans. However, the Vorta is unaware of Murdock’s quasi-immortal nature, and is therefore overwhelmed by centuries of experiences. Murdock leads the Vorta in a cat-and-mouse chase through several of his former lives, while the senior officers, led by first officer James Brubaker, work to recapture the ship.
This story takes place during the Cardassian/Dominion occupation of Deep Space Nine.
"From Where the Sun Now Stands, Part I." Stardate 51729.6 A possible "blind spot" in the Cardassian's defense grid is uncovered on the far side of Cardassian space, in an area unexplored in almost a century. Captain Murdock of the Hannibal volunteers to fly into the area, as he has some prior knowledge of it (as "Cassius Flagg," unknown to most of Starfleet).
Strangely, Murdock defies orders and takes the runabout Euphrates on a solo mission into the area. It is subsequently revealed to the Hannibal's senior officers that Murdock, tired of the constant fighting associated with this life of a Starfleet captain, has elected to disappear for an indefinite interval before establishing a new identity. Using a confederate, Murdock is able to retrieve a previously obtained private spacecraft, with which he intends to leave his former life.
"From Where the Sun Now Stands, Part II." Stardate 51734.2 During his sojourn through the previously unexplored sectors, Murdock finds what appears to be a lost Federation colony on a remote planet. However, he also finds a secret Jem'Hadar base on the planet, which itself turns out to have been constructed by the long-lost Kalandans. The Jem'Hadar are planning to use the colony as bait to trap the Federation fleet by issuing a distress call. Murdock, using his knowledge of Kalandan technology, is able to use the planet's defense mechanisms to foil the Jem'Hadar, saving the colonists and the fleet.
Subsequent to rejoining his crew, Murdock makes a full report to the Admiralty, including his original intent to desert his post. Although they are naturally disturbed, the Admiralty does recognize that he ultimately decided not to turn his back on helpless civilians or his Starfleet colleagues, and that at the current time Starfleet can use all the experienced captains it can get.
Perhaps the most controversial story yet. This story takes place after Operation Return, but before the massive repairs to the Hannibal are complete. The title comes from the famous speech by Chief Joseph of the Néz Pierce: "Hear me, my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I shall fight no more forever." MM
